Packaging approval worksheet

Tissue Window Box Material Review

Review a tissue window box as an assembly of components, not simply as a paper box. List the board, window material, adhesive, coating and opening arrangement, then compare their functional benefits with the evidence required for the proposed end-of-life message. Cepi's paper-packaging guidance discusses how added materials and treatments affect paper recycling. This buyer worksheet supports a design choice; it does not certify a particular box or establish collection access in a destination market.

BUYER CHECKLIST

Component record for the proposed box design

Base board
Supplier material reference ___; board description ___; thickness or weight declaration ___; surface treatment ___; document revision ___. Request the actual proposed board rather than a generic brochure. Keep product protection and opening performance visible: removing a treatment without understanding its role may alter the usable package.
Window and attachment
Window material declaration ___; dimensions/coverage ___; attachment method ___; adhesive reference ___; component supplier evidence ___. Ask whether the window is separable by the intended user and what remains on the board. Record observed removal behavior with a specimen; do not assume every transparent window has the same composition or handling.
Print and finishing
Ink system declared ___; varnish/coating ___; lamination or decorative additions ___; relevant technical file ___. Ask the converter to identify components that are easy to overlook in artwork, including hidden layers. A drawing may show the visible window but omit the adhesive or treatment that matters to a recyclability assessment.
Use and handling
Shelf-display objective ___; product containment ___; opening method ___; dispensing behavior ___; shipping-pack interaction ___; sample-trial reference ___. Evaluate the complete filled construction against the original buying problem. A window that improves appearance but obstructs opening or requires unplanned protection may create costs outside the box quotation.
End-of-life evidence
Intended destination ___; collection route information ___; component separation instruction ___; assessment provider/method ___; tested construction ___; proposed claim and qualification ___. Have the market reviewer connect material assessment with the intended public wording. Evidence for base board alone is not a complete assessment of all added components.

Design comparison: choose a route with visible trade-offs

No-window alternative
Ask for a specimen that meets the same containment, opening and print brief without a window. Compare the actual functional differences and quoted scope. Avoid calling it automatically preferable: reduced components can simplify review, but the buyer still needs a working box and supportable destination-market messaging.
Window retained
Keep the component list and request assessment for the finished construction or a documented explanation of applicability. Review window coverage, attachment and disposal instructions with the responsible specialist. Do not convert a supplier’s statement that one film is recyclable into a claim that the assembled paper box follows the same collection route.
Uncertain material identity
Pause the affected claim and design release question until the proposed component is identified. Ask the converter to supply the missing specification or offer an alternative with a clear declaration. Record uncertainty in the comparison matrix rather than choosing the least expensive option as though its material identity were established.

DECISION POINTS

What to align before the next commitment.

01

Illustrative comparison: display benefit versus evidence work

Suppose one proposal uses a clear window and another uses a printed product illustration. Compare shelf presentation, opening behavior, handling protection and evidence work for both. The buyer may prefer either after review. This example does not claim that the window option is unrecyclable or that removing it guarantees an environmentally superior package.

02

Keep assessment boundaries narrow

An assessment might concern repulping behavior under a defined process, while the buyer’s label concerns consumer disposal in a particular city. Those questions are connected but distinct. Ask the reviewer to explain what the evidence answers and which local collection or sorting facts must still be established before copy is released.

03

Use a component change map

When a window or adhesive changes, identify affected specifications, sample trials, print appearance and claim evidence. Revisit those items rather than repeating unrelated approvals. Keep the old and proposed component references in the comparison so a later reorder cannot rely on an ambiguous description such as the same transparent film.

WORKING SEQUENCE

A clearer route from question to decision.

  1. 01

Describe why the box needs a window and obtain a component list for every proposed construction. Request missing film, adhesive, coating and finishing declarations before comparison.

  2. 02

Compare functional samples against a common brief, including opening, dispensing, presentation and transport handling. Record advantages and disadvantages for each design rather than evaluating the drawing alone.

  3. 03

Ask the responsible specialist to review the finished construction and destination disposal message. Document assessment scope, local-information gaps and acceptable claim wording separately.

  4. 04

Approve the chosen design, component references and sample revision. Connect any public claim to its evidence and reopen affected reviews when components or destination requirements change.

DIRECT ANSWERS

Questions buyers ask before moving forward.

01Does a paper box with a window belong in paper recycling?+

Confirm the construction and local collection instructions. Material names do not settle how an assembled package is collected or processed in every destination. Obtain matched assessment and appropriate disposal guidance.

02Is a removable window always the best choice?+

Assess removal practicality and the buyer’s functional needs using a physical specimen. A theoretically detachable component may be difficult to separate in normal use. Compare workable alternatives instead of treating one design feature as a complete environmental result.

03Can the factory’s board certificate cover the window and glue?+

Read the document scope and ask for the applicability explanation. Do not extend evidence for one component to other materials or to the complete box unless the evidence actually covers that construction.
