Commercial hand towel selection

Multifold vs C-fold Hand Towels: Check Dispenser Fit Before Buying

Choose a folded hand towel by the dispenser's documented refill requirements and a physical compatibility trial. Multifold, C-fold and single-fold identify different product formats, but a fold name alone is insufficient. Compare folded dimensions, unfolded sheet size, stack height and dispensing behavior before accepting a bulk offer.

Compare formats without assuming interchangeability

Ask for a sample or fold drawing when supplier naming is unclear. Use the dispenser maker's instructions to identify permitted refills.

Multifold
Record how sheets are folded and arranged in the stack, together with folded width and depth. Check how the next sheet is presented during dispensing. Do not assume all products sold under this name have the same dimensions.
C-fold
Request the actual fold drawing, folded dimensions and recommended dispenser. A matching general paper size does not establish that the stack will sit correctly or pass through the opening.
Single-fold
Check the manufacturer's refill requirements and the dimensions of the supplied pack. Compare the proposed stack and dispensing behavior in the nominated accessory rather than choosing by category name alone.
Roll or center-pull
These are separate refill systems, not substitutions established by a folded towel comparison. If changing systems, review the accessory, installation and operating needs as a separate decision.

Illustrative troubleshooting sequence

This is a hypothetical inspection example, not a report of a tested product.

Observed issue
A sample fits inside the cabinet but several sheets emerge together. Record the dispenser model, fold arrangement, loading level and sample identity before deciding why it happened.
Controlled next check
Review loading instructions and confirm the proposed refill specification. Change one agreed trial condition at a time, then record whether the observation changes. Avoid simultaneously swapping paper, loading level and dispenser.
Purchase decision
If the cause remains unresolved, keep approval pending. A lower case price cannot compensate for an unverified compatibility claim, and a successful trial applies only to the documented combination.

V-fold, Z-fold and the refill drawing

V-fold sketch in words
A basic V-fold sheet folds once into two panels: open sheet → central fold → two-panel profile. Confirm the actual panel widths, orientation and interleaving arrangement; a catalogue name alone is not a dimensional specification.
Z-fold sketch in words
A basic Z profile uses two alternating folds to form three panels: panel 1 turns one way, panel 2 returns the other way. Naming varies across ranges, so ask for the supplier drawing and unfolded sample rather than deriving dimensions from the letter.
Interfold is a stack relationship
V-fold or Z-fold terminology describes a sheet profile; interfold also describes how adjacent sheets overlap in the refill stack. Both the sheet and the loaded stack need to match the dispenser trial.

Centre-pull versus outside-feed rolls

Centre-pull route
Paper is drawn from the centre of the roll through the intended feed opening. Confirm whether the core is removed or another preparation is specified, and follow the matching dispenser instructions.
Outside-feed route
Paper unwinds from the outside circumference. The system may use a holder, a cutter or a controlled dispensing mechanism; record the roll support and feed requirements instead of treating all roll towels as one system.
Choosing or changing the system
Start with the task: hand drying, surface wiping or another defined use. Review dispenser compatibility, loading access, sheet control, sample behavior and refill workload. A move between centre-pull and outside-feed may require different equipment; verify the complete system before purchasing refills.

DECISION POINTS

What to align before the next commitment.

01

Folded size and sheet size answer different questions

Folded dimensions describe the shape placed inside the accessory. Unfolded dimensions describe the available sheet. Record both so a supplier cannot satisfy one field while leaving the other ambiguous. Keep units consistent when comparing drawings expressed in inches and millimetres.

02

Case quantity is a separate comparison

After compatibility is established, align sheets per pack and packs per case before comparing prices. Also review the physical sheet specification. The foodservice cost-in-use guide explains how an observed service trial can support a later comparison of operating cost.

03

Preserve the matched combination

For distributors serving multiple sites, retain a table of approved towel and dispenser pairs. Link it to the sample reference and current quotation. A supplier substitution needs review if fold, dimensions, sheet construction or stack arrangement changes, even when the sales name stays the same.

WORKING SEQUENCE

A clearer route from question to decision.

  1. 01

Identify the installed dispenser and obtain its refill instructions. If the model is unknown, document measurements and photographs while leaving compatibility unconfirmed.

  2. 02

Request samples with folded and unfolded dimensions, fold arrangement and pack information. Remove incomplete offers from a direct price ranking until the missing fields are resolved.

  3. 03

Trial each proposed combination using an agreed observation record. Check loading, withdrawal and behavior as the pack is used, then record exceptions rather than relying on a single successful pull.

  4. 04

Approve the documented combination before placing a bulk order. Keep the specification and sample reference available to purchasing and site teams when replacements are proposed.

DIRECT ANSWERS

Questions buyers ask before moving forward.

01Are multifold and C-fold towels interchangeable?+

Do not assume so. Check the accessory's refill requirements and trial the specific sample. Similar paper dimensions or a shared sales description are insufficient evidence of equivalent dispensing behavior.

02Does thicker paper mean better dispensing?+

Thickness alone does not answer the compatibility question. Evaluate the complete sample, stack and accessory combination. Keep perceived softness and drying preferences separate from loading and dispensing observations.

03Can a supplier guarantee fit from a photo?+

A photo can help identify a model or an obvious mismatch, but it may not reveal usable internal dimensions or refill instructions. Obtain the missing information and run the physical trial before closing approval.
